The old adage, “you only have one chance to make a good first impression,” is most certainly critical to the job interview process; after all, an impressive resume or phone interview may not always be enough to secure the job for which you have applied. Here are three tips designed to help you leave a stellar first impression during your next in-person job interview.
1. Dress to impress. Prior to words being exchanged, a candidate’s overall appearance is often the initial line of communication with the interviewer. In fact, it’s not unrealistic for a well-qualified candidate to be immediately overlooked, due to his or her personal appearance. Therefore, be sure that you are well groomed and neatly dressed when arriving for a job interview. As a general rule of thumb, you should always strive to not only meet the qualifications of a job on paper, but in person as well.
2. It’s business, and it’s personal. Do you come off as likable? Do you exude professionalism and charm? Believe it or not, your personality plays a big role in formulating a strong first impression. Whether it’s your enthusiasm, humor, or welcoming smile, you should always find ways to leverage the unique trait(s) that sets you apart from other candidates; your distinct personality can leave a positive, long-lasting impression on the interviewer.
3.Focus on the little things. Addressing a person by name, maintaining eye contact, even simple head nods to show that you are attentive and listening, can all go a long way in a job interview. Always seek to indicate to the interviewer that you are confident, engaged, and eager to obtain the position.
