LAC Group’s film archiving division PRO-TEK honors the George Eastman Museum as it sponsors the 4th Nitrate Picture Show, a festival of film conservation that features screenings of vintage nitrate prints along with lectures and workshops. The event runs May 4-6, 2018 in Rochester, New York.
Screenings this year include a special pre-festival showing of Hamlet (1948), from a 35mm nitrate print courtesy of the Library of Congress. Directed by and starring Sir Laurence Olivier, this cinematic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
The Eastman Museum, on the National Historic Landmark estate of film entrepreneur George Eastman, houses a photography and cinema collection including early cameras and related motion picture film technology.
The Museum’s 500-seat Dryden Theatre is devoted to showing films in their original formats to honor their historical and aesthetic value. The Dryden is one of the few theaters in the world equipped to project original nitrate film screenings part of its regular program.
