Digital asset management FAQs

What is digital asset management (DAM)?

DAM is the systematic approach to the organization, storage and retrieval of rich media files, including management of digital rights and permissions. DAM incorporates both technology and processes.

What is a digital asset?

A digital asset is any form of content or media formatted into a binary source, generally categorized into three major groups:

  1. Textual content
  2. Images
  3. Multimedia

Digital assets may have been “born” physical and digitized, such as scanning a photograph on paper, or born digital, like a photograph taken using an iPhone or digital camera.

Digital assets include any number of rich media file like photographs, music, videos, animations, podcasts and more.

How are digital assets used?

Rich media assets were once the sole domain of creative departments and agencies, but with the explosion of digital content, social media networks and e-business, users across all functions and departments are now interacting with digital assets daily to do their work.

What’s a DAM system do?

DAM technology allows you to store digital asset files along with their metadata. Metadata is the ‘data about the data’ that provides contextual information which can then be mapped to a variety of searchable fields for easy retrieval of relevant content.

What is the difference between DAM and CMS (content management systems)?

DAM focuses on the asset itself, including metadata or contextual information, for logical storing and easy retrieval of the asset. CMS focus on integrating digital assets into a piece of content for publishing in the required media format, whether it be a text article going on a website, a video on YouTube or a report going to a research publication.

Should we invest in a DAM system, and how much does it cost?

The decision to make that investment and the ultimate price tag both depend on a variety of factors—how many digital asset files you have, how much you expect your collection to grow, how those assets are being used and so forth. In addition, there are big picture considerations, like what you are missing out on by not being able to use these digital media files in marketing, customer service, sales and business development, product development, training or any other function.
