Home News Ron Friedmann on AI adoption in law

Ron FriedmannRon Friedmann, LAC Group Chief Knowledge & Information Officer, was asked to comment on the results of a recent Bloomberg Law survey on artificial intelligence (AI).

Nearly 500 legal operations practitioners and executives from a mix of law firms and in-house counsel were surveyed. More than half (54%) of survey participants said they don’t use AI or machine learning tools and another quarter said they didn’t know—results that didn’t surprise Ron.

When asked to comment, he said that the legal market is known to lag other sectors in adopting technology, and that the survey included many smaller legal entities, which also tend to trail large firms and corporations. According to Ron,

“Other surveys have found a correlation between firm size and adoption rates.”

Survey respondents cited lack of funding, low tech savviness and not enough time to learn new systems as the primary barriers to adopting artificial intelligence and machine learning.
